NCIC publications Khelef Khalifa for raising concerns about ethnic disdain

November 27, Nairobi, Kenya—Khelef Khalifa, the director of the Muslim Human Rights (MUHURI) organisation, has been called before

the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) over discrimination, hate speech, and ethnic contempt.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Commission said that the activist had made statements that were against the 2008 National Cohesion and Integration (NCI) Act.

Khalifa was instructed by NCIC CEO Harrison Kariuki to appear before the Commission on Monday, December 9, 2024.

In violation of the NCI Act of 2008, he stated, "NCIC summons Mr. Khelef Khalifa for remarks that border on ethnic contempt, hate speech, and discrimination."

As the issue is handled by the appropriate law enforcement agencies, Kariuki asked Kenyans to be tolerant and encourage peaceful coexistence.

The summons comes after an internet video of Khalifa speaking at a gathering in Lamu County about land ownership, security,

the marginalisation of development and perceived inequity in government representation went viral.

Lamu query

In the video, Khalifa claimed that the welfare and development of the local community had suffered as a result of residents moving to Lamu under previous President Jomo Kenyatta.

He further asserted that people from other areas have persisted in acquiring and controlling land, affecting governance and property ownership at the detriment of the Lamu people.

"Limuru, the Kikuyu people convened to talk about their personal troubles and worries rather than national ones without consulting any other tribe.

Every tribe is battling for its own rights; this Kenya is but a moniker.

According to Khalifa, who was cited by NCIC, "each tribe is fighting for the presidency for their own benefit, not for the country."
